Behaviors to Look out for in a New Puppy

Looking after a new puppy is one of the most rewarding things you can do. They are cute and cuddly little babies, but they also need a certain amount of discipline from you as their owner. If you don't get this right then you could end up with a whole mess on your hands! So what are Behaviors to look out for in a new Puppy? There are several, but we will cover the basics first.

First off all, they should be house trained. Don't expect your puppy to know where it lives at the moment. They are going to need at least a few weeks in their new home before they learn this, and house training is the best way to achieve this. To start with, sit near the door and keep a watchful eye on your puppy. When you first get your puppy, go through the house with your dog looking for places that he has not been before. You could mark these areas off with yellow cones. This is a great way to keep your dog from getting into something he shouldn't. In addition to marking off places, you could try to get him to potty somewhere other than the kitchen. This will help you when you have visitors because you won't have to clean up.

The next thing to look out for is that your dog is kept on a leash. A lot of dogs just aren't ready to be tied yet to a leash yet, so take them out for walks early on. This way they can become used to it gradually. If they become fidgety while on the leash or jump on guests then take them outside to finish their walk. This will help your pup get used to the idea that he must go outside if he wants to be happy. Also make sure that he doesn't chew on things in your house, as this can also be a very bad habit.

Hopefully these few tips will help you start to see behavior modification occurring in your dog more quickly. Be sure to always be alert for any negative changes and be sure that you address them quickly. Remember that the house training process is a lifelong commitment and can be an easy thing to fall into. Be sure that you are prepared for it and you will be rewarded with a great dog.
